Becoming A Christian Freelance Writer: A Step-By-Step Guide

There has been a boom in demand for Christian freelance writers in recent years, with several new publishing houses opening and specifically catering to the seemingly insatiable demand, particularly for good, clean Christian romance stories. If you are Christian, with a passionate belief in God, then writing for this niche but ever expanding market must seem not just like a logical step, but like a dream come true.

It is very difficult for those writers that are not of the Christian faith to break into this market as most publishers, or clients require this as a prerequisite to getting the job. That said, if you are highly-skilled at what you do, then it is by no means impossible.

If you feel that this is the next logical step in your career path, then hopefully my step-by-step guide will be of some assistance to you:

Decide what kind of writing you want to do

The first thing that you need to do before you jump in headfirst and start filling out applications is figure out exactly what kind of writing you want to do. Do you want to write blog articles for religious groups and organizations? Do you want to write motivational short stories with a strong Christian message? Do you want to ghostwrite entire novels? The entire spectrum of solutions is open to you.

Fine tune your message

Every writer should submit a well-thought out, articulate proposal. However, this is especially true when pitching at a niche market. You need to demonstrate your Christian credentials, your understanding of the scriptures, and that you believe passionately in traditional values. It is okay to be non-practicing, so long as your core belief set is still there.

Online Freelance sites

Now you are ready to start applying for positions. The large, online freelance sites are excellent places to start as they are usually teeming with vacancies in this niche. Apply for as many positions as possible, and you should strike lucky.

Specialist blogs and magazines

A simple Google search will pull up a whole host of specialist blogs and magazines, all of which may be receptive to an inquiry from you. Make sure you read their submission guidelines carefully before contacting them, in case they are not in the market for new writers. Blogs and magazines can be a great springboard to additional writing jobs.
